Andromedia Selects Object Design's Objectstore for Aria Web Recording and Reporting System

High Performance, Scalable Object Database Provides Powerful Engine for Innovative Web Site Recording and Reporting System

BURLINGTON, Mass., October 8, 1996, Object Design, Inc. (NASDAQ: ODIS), the leading provider of object database technology for the Web, today announced that Andromedia has selected ObjectStore as the database for its Aria World Wide Web Recording and Reporting System. The Aria system is an object oriented, distributed Web site tracking solution that lets Webmasters and IS professionals capture and analyze Web site activity data on demand.

The Object Design=E2 ObjectStore=E2 database stores and manages all activity information collected by the Aria system including cookie profiles, form field data posted to the server and any data normally written to log files. This information can then be converted to graphical and tabular reports and studied by Aria=92s reporting and analysis tools.

The Aria system was built from the ground up using object oriented technologies to meet the ever more demanding requirements of Web applications =96 high performance and the ability to scale to millions of users. Andromedia selected the ObjectStore database as a key component because of its high performance and distributed architecture, enabling the Aria system to handle millions of hits per day.

"By using ObjectStore and object oriented technologies, Andromedia has built a Web site tracking system that will not only meet users=92 needs today, but can handle the kind of Web traffic we expect to see in the years to come as Web usage grows," said Kent Godfrey, president and CEO at Andromedia. "ObjectStore=92s high performance and distributed architecture made it a= clear choice in our search for the database that would give Aria a competitive edge. In addition, using ObjectStore saved us development time and costs because implementing it in our object oriented development environment was very easy."

"Web site management tools like Aria are essential components for companies conducting any type of business over the Web," said Robert Goldman, president and CEO at Object Design. "Aria lets companies capture a gold mine of information about their customers -- information that has cost millions in the past to obtain."

About Aria

The Aria World Wide Web Recording and Reporting System enables companies to measure the success of their Web presence by generating detailed reports and graphs on specific usage activity. Content providers, advertisers and Webmasters can use this information to thoroughly understand the behavior of their Web site visitors, both historically and in real time. Understanding Web site user behavior enables corporations to generate personalized content, target messages and advertising and increase the effectiveness of their sites.

The Aria system is made up of distinct modules for monitoring, recording and reporting on Web site activity. Aria Monitor resides on the Web server as a linkable library to the server and monitors the connection between the Web user=92s browser and the Web server itself. Aria Monitor captures all activity information passed between the client and the server, and sends this information in real time to the Aria Recorder module.

Aria Recorder receives the raw data sent from Aria Monitor, buffers it if necessary and creates a new object or updates an existing object with the new data. Aria Recorder then stores the objects in ObjectStore.

Aria Reporter is used for analysis and reporting of the data captured in the ObjectStore database. Aria Reporter links to Aria Recorder and enables users to view the activity data in tabular and graphical form. It includes an intuitive user interface and secure environment that allows Web administrators, content providers, advertisers and marketing managers to easily view, analyze, print and distribute reports regarding Web site= activity.

About ObjectStore

ObjectStore is the data management solution that best addresses the requirements of today's dynamic Web environment -- the need to support objects which encompass extended data types and their extended relationships. Dynamic Web applications require the ability to retrieve objects, instantly search and assemble them on pages, and deliver those pages quickly to a Web server. ObjectStore's architecture manages extended relationships better than traditional database technologies that require data to be stored in tables. Only ObjectStore can meet the performance and scalability demands of high volume, interactive Web applications.
